Castello Arechi, Salerno Italy
A new friend told me about one of the only Tex-Mex restaurants in southern Italy. My craving for fajitas was so strong yesterday I rolled out of bed and hopped a train to Salerno to get my fix.
There was no real plan other than finding the fajitas. I didn’t even book a room. Just thinking about how many times in my life I’ve had no plan other than finding tacos, margaritas, guac, etc. I’m sure I’m not alone. I found a room a couple doors down from “El Salvador”. Two choices for my accommodation. The nice room with a large bed and mold on the ceiling in the bathroom or the economy room with three small beds for tiny people. I picked the economy room which was over an Irish pub. I was treated later in the evening to a hair metal cover band serenading me to sleep. They didn’t sing “Galway Girl” or “Take Me Home, Country Roads” so was that even an Irish pub?
From the beach I saw a castle (Arechi Castle) overlooking the town and sea . My first thought was that it was too far away to reach. Too high of an elevation (about 300m above sea level). No real plan to actually visit the castle but I started walking in that direction anyway. I made my way up the narrow walkways and streets to find a steep hike through the forest. I was escorted by cats (x 1,532).
About an hour and a half later I found myself at the base of Arechi Castle (Castello di Arechi). Admittedly, I was light headed and didn’t bring water. Found some castle cows that took good care of me. After visiting with them and exploring the castle I made my way back down to town. My reward was chips/salsa, margs and of course the fajitas! The food was amazing! Definitely earned that meal.
I write this only to remind you and myself of what is possible when you follow your desire for Mexican food. Your reward may include a clowder of cats, a gnarly hike, discovering a medieval castle and pep talks from some delicious looking cows.
*The construction of Arechi castle began in the 6th century under the Byzantine rule. ** Visiting Arechi Castle is a must do on the Amalfi Coast
